On the cover: Host genetic differences can be important determinants of tuberculosis susceptibility and outcome. In this issue, Tobin et al. (pp. 717–730) use a forward genetic screen in the zebrafish to show that mutations in the lta4h gene confer hypersusceptibility to mycobacterial infection by altering the balance of pro- and anti-inflammatory signaling molecules. In humans, heterozygosity at the LTA4H locus confers protection from two mycobacterial diseases, tuberculosis and leprosy. The cover image highlights the River Ganges, where the zebrafish originated, and the countries of Nepal and Vietnam, where the human genetic studies described in this paper were carried out.
